When to Go

Peak Season: June to August

Many museums and attractions are open only during the high season from Memorial Day to Labor Day; others have extended summer hours. You will seldom have difficulty finding a place to stay or eat.

Off Season: mid-October to mid-April

Snow and ice begin to cover the landscape in late fall, and often remain until early spring. Blizzards are common in the winter, and driving in such conditions can be perilous.

Shoulder Season: mid-April to May; September to mid-October

The best time to visit is in the shoulder season, when temperatures and humidity levels—particularly in the eastern half of the state—are more moderate than at other times of the year. However, be aware that spring is tornado season and is thunderstorms are not uncommon.
