Getting Here and Around

The Guna's autonomy over their territory has led to arbitrary taxes being placed on visitors, including a $3–$5 island tax, a $20 entry fee (per person) when arriving by car, and a $105 charge for boats visiting for more than 72 hours (you must provide documentation declaring your next destination). Independent of the country's laws, these taxes are part of an ongoing debate with the Panamanian government. Expect to show a valid passport several times throughout your journey, and have plenty of cash.
