Punta Gorda
Punta Gorda and Toledo offer great opportunities for outdoor activities—fishing, diving, snorkeling, sea and river kayaking, and caving. The problem has been that due to so few visitors to the Deep South and the limited number of tour operators, visitors often arrived to find that few tours were actually available on a given day, or if they were running, tended to cost much more than in other parts of Belize. An attempt to schedule tours to always run on specific days—for example, to Port Honduras Marine Reserve for snorkeling on Monday and to Blue Creek for caving on Tuesday—has fizzled out. Still, with tourism slowly increasing, more tours are being offered, and most prices are reasonable, given the high cost for gasoline and supplies. Try to go with a group of four to six, as many tours have a price based on a group of up to six people, not per person.
Among the most popular tours are those to the Snake Cayes with a full day of snorkeling, fishing, and beach bumming. Another popular tour combines Blue Creek caves and Agua Caliente Wildlife Sanctuary or a tour to Lubaantun, that's often combined with a visit to Rio Blanco National Park and its waterfall.
