When to Go

Peak Season: May to September

Macedonia's natural beauty is its biggest draw, and from late spring—when wildflowers are abundant and the weather is temperate—through early fall, visitors will find much to do. July and August are the hottest months, ideal for mountain hikes and water sports.

Off Season: November, April

Depending on where you go—in the warmer, Mediterranean south or the mountains' high peaks—you'll still find enough to do outdoors in these months, with the advantage of no crowds to speak of in the cities, villages, and major tourist attractions.

Shoulder Season: December to March

Throughout the winter months, skiers and snowboarders head for Macedonia's uncrowded, unpretentious, and relatively inexpensive ski resorts for lots of powdery snow and peaks for every level of expertise. There are plenty of homespun markets and a festive atmosphere around Christmastime in villages and cities.
