Fodor's Expert Review Eco-Pousada Casa Bobó

Vila Monte Alegre s/n, Salvador, Bahia, 45420–000, Brazil Fodor's Choice

Perched atop a hill in the the Mata Atlântica rain forest, with a 360-degree view across the beaches of Moreré and Bainema, this bohemian eco-pousada is the ultimate into-the-jungle retreat. Built from traditional materials such as piacava wood and local clay in conjuction with the local community of Monte Alegre, the bungalows have been designed to heighten the connection with nature, so showers with glass doors face out to the jungle and hammocks are hung to maximize star-gazing. While rustic and remote, the attention to detail (fluffy towels, candles, and courtesy sunblock) and highly personalized service enable romancing couples to feel right at home. Charismatic owner Myriam and her husband Nilton are always on hand to organize complicated transfers, oversee the delicious à la carte breakfast (with homemade bread, fresh fruits, and even ham imported from Spain), shake up a caiprinha with freshly plucked mangoes, or help you plan your exploration. Moreré beach is accessible by a pleasant 15-minute walk or five-minute motor-taxi.
