When to Go

In July and August all the roads, trails, and visitor centers are open, and the Snake River's float season is in full swing. You can expect smaller crowds and often lower rates in spring and fall, but some services and roads are limited. Grand Teton Lodge Company, the park's major concessionaire, winds down its activities in late September, and most of Teton Park Road closes from November through April (U.S. 26/191/89 stays open all winter). In spring and fall, Teton Park Road is open to pedestrians, cyclists, and in-line skaters; in winter, it's transformed into a cross-country ski trail.

The towns south of the park rev up in winter. Teton Village and Jackson both buzz with the energy of Snow King Resort and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Prices rise for the peak winter season.

Festivals and Events

ElkFest. Begun in 1967, this popular two-day festival is held the third weekend in May. Its centerpiece is the Elk Antler Auction, when thousands of pounds of naturally shed antlers are sold to the highest bidder. Get a taste of the High Noon Chili Cookoff, and enjoy the spectacle of khaki-clad lads hauling around massive racks. www.elkfest.org.

Fall Arts Festival. More than 50 events celebrate art, music, food, and wine throughout Jackson Hole during this 11-day annual festival in mid-September. www.jacksonholechamber.com.

Grand Teton Music Festival. Since 1962, these summer symphony concerts have been wowing audiences in the world-renowned Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village. The festival presents full orchestra concerts as smaller ensembles. www.gtmf.org.
