Why We Like It

We love the Topaz for its quiet setting and residential feel on a tree-shaded street, with the city's major sites within easy reach. It's fun to explore the surrounding restaurants and bars, though if we're feeling tired, the Topaz Bar is a cozy place to hang in for the night. The Kimpton signature services are always a plus, including its open-arm welcome to our doggie and the nightly lobby wine hours.

Fodor's Expert Review

You’d never suspect from the brick façade that the Kimpton Topaz Hotel is an entrée into a Moroccan-inspired fantasy, full of color and whimsy. Admittedly, it’s a tad funky for a DC stay (at least the lobby), but it’s definitely comfortable and cozy. You’re on a quiet, tree-shaded street near Dupont Circle, and plenty of Kimpton’s signature services will make you feel right at home, including yoga mats in every room and free bike rentals. You’re conveniently located near a lively bar and restaurant scene, with DC’s major sites an easy Metro hop away.

You Should Know An extra facilities fee includes Wi-Fi, local and long distance calls, and car service within a mile of the hotel.

Room

Guest rooms are bright and airy, with soothing tones of white, silver, blue, and green punctuated by Moroccan motifs (think starburst mirrors and bazaar-inspired textiles) and green-and-white-striped walls. The best part? The generous size, starting at 375 square feet—huge by DC standards.

Tip Keep in mind two specialty rooms: the yoga room and energy room (complete with your own personal workout space with choice of stationary bike or elliptical).

Bathroom

The bathrooms are smallish, though half the rooms have a dressing area as well for a little extra glamor. Go ahead and put on the fuzzy animal-print robe. It’s as plush and soft as it looks.

Lobby

The lobby extols a swanky and chic Moroccan motif, with colorful furnishings and mood lighting. It flows into the Topaz Bar, a popular after-work haunt.

Spa

The hotel does not have an on-site spa, but in-room spa services are available upon request.

Gym

The hotel does not have a fitness center, though passes to LA Fitness (three blocks away) are available. Or reserve the energy room with its own workout space.

Dining

The Topaz Bar is a local hangout, offering specialty cocktails and Asian-inspired bites either at the bar or around small tables. Weekly events include “Liquid Therapy Hour” Monday through Saturday.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You’re near the buzzing Dupont Circle area, with its art galleries (including the fabulous Phillips Collection), restaurants, and bars. The White House is a 15-minute walk, with the National Mall's world-famous museums and monuments just beyond that. With the city’s traffic and parking issues, it’s safer to use public transportation to get around. Metro is your best bet (other than walking), with the Dupont Circle Metro stop a 6-minute walk away.

Restaurants

Italian and Greek small plates (with optional wine pairings) at Iron Gate (across the street) are served in a romantic, wisteria-draped courtyard (desirable even in winter, thanks a strategically placed fire pit); the cozy dining room is inviting as well. Beautifully presented Spanish tapas at Boqueria (6-minute walk) are best enjoyed on the sunny patio. Brunch is hugely popular for its bottomless mimosas and sangria (not to mention, the farm-egg-topped paella).

Bars

A sleek, classy bar devoted to its namesake cocktail, Dirty Martini (3-minute walk) has happy hour specials nearly every day. The après-work crowd beehives to the Eighteenth Street Lounge (4-minute walk), offering five different sections on several floors of a rambling old town house (including a speakeasy with vintage sofas and chandeliers and a breezy rooftop deck). You’ll have to look for the poorly signed entrance; it’s a little hard to find.
