Downtown, Chinatown, and Penn Quarter Neighborhood Snapshot

Great Experiences Downtown

  • CityCentre: This high-end, open-air shopping district also has some good restaurants including the acclaimed Fig & Olive.
  • International Spy Museum: Indulge your inner James Bond with a look at 007's Aston Martin, along with more serious toys used by real spies.
  • Dining: Penn Quarter is one of the city's best areas for dining, where José Andrés opened his first restaurant, Jaleo.
  • National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum: These masterful museums have something for everyone.
  • Theater District: Performances ranging from Shakespeare to contemporary dramas and musicals are mounted in Penn Quarter's theaters.

Getting Here

The Federal Triangle or Archives–Navy Memorial–Penn Quarter Metro stops serve the government buildings along Pennsylvania Avenue. Gallery Place–Chinatown gives direct access to the Capital One Arena, Chinatown, and the nearby museums. Judiciary Square has its own stop, and Metro Center is the best choice for the National Theatre and Penn Quarter. Bus routes crisscross the area as well. Street parking on nights and weekends is limited.

Planning Your Time

Downtown is densely packed with major attractions. Art lovers might focus on the National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum; history buffs will enjoy the National Building Museum; families with kids may prefer the International Spy Museum. Come back at night to enjoy the many restaurants.

Quick Bites

Nando's Peri-Peri. For a quick lunch after visiting the National Portrait Gallery, this spicy Portuguese chicken restaurant can't be beat. 819 7th St. NW www.nandosperiperi.com Gallery Pl.–Chinatown.

Teaism. The District's favorite Asian tearoom chain has a big location in Penn Quarter near the National Archives for tea, pastries, or a bento box or sandwich. 400 8th St. NW www.teaism.com Archives–Navy Memorial–Penn Quarter.

Safety

Downtown's blocks of government and office buildings still become a bit of a ghost town when the working day is done, but a revitalized Penn Quarter remains energized late into the evenings, especially when there are events at the Capital One Arena.
