Fodor's Expert Review Carlton Hotel
140 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84111, USA
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
An absolute steal on the quieter eastern side of Downtown and Temple Square, this atmospheric 1920s hotel with a gorgeous brick exterior has remained resolutely old-fashioned, offering few frills but plenty of value, especially in the spacious suites. Watch your step in all main-floor rooms, where the bathrooms are literally a step up from the rest of room.
You'll find refrigerators, microwaves, and coffeemakers in every room, and rates include hot cooked breakfast. There's no on-site parking, but a nearby garage charges about $20 nightly.PROS
- excellent Downtown location
- friendly service
- made-to-order breakfast is quite good
CONS
- some rooms are small
- partly hemmed in by high-rises and a parking garage
- no gym
