1. Barn Again
A favorite shop in the Windham area, Barn Again is set in a 200-year-old barn with exposed rafters and paneled ceilings and walls. It's stuffed with well-chosen items, from furnishings to housewares to decorations for your Christmas tree. You can't miss the bright red exterior. It's run by the same ladies as the adjoining Country Suite Bed and Breakfast.

2. Mystery Spot
The real mystery is how this shop brought together such an eclectic collection: vintage clothing, costume jewelry, midcentury housewares, and oddball bits and pieces like a crackle-faced baby doll and a drum major's uniform. If you're into old vinyl, you'll find a huge selection of old records in the back room.

3. Fabulous Furniture
In nearby Boiceville, owner Steve Heller does incredible things with trees—some already fallen, others oddly shaped. Inside his one-of-a-kind store and workshop, you'll find custom-made tables and other furnishings, as well as unique sculptures fashioned from metal and restored and fanciful classic cars.

4. Ferndale Marketplace Antiques
A warren of 13 rooms on three floors, Ferndale Marketplace Antiques brims with glassware, paintings, furniture, and vintage costume jewelry. Built in 1894, the building served as a post office and general store and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Exploring its nooks and crannies is as much fun as studying the objects for sale (feel free to rummage around). Remnants of the old post office are still apparent.

5. Golden Notebook
An institution since 1978, this venerable independent bookstore's friendly staff helps you navigate the eclectic mix that's heavy on local lore and children's favorites.
