When to Go

Winters tend to be gentle in the desert regions, but between May and early September blistering heat is not uncommon. Even the mountainous areas can be surprisingly warm during a hot spell. In the lowlands, plan summer outdoor excursions for early morning or late afternoon. Spring is cooler, but it's often accompanied by blustery, dust-laden winds. One of the best times to visit is between September and early November, when skies are clear blue and the weather is usually balmy. The mountains typically get plenty of snow in the winter months, though the roads are well maintained and navigable, and the snow wonderfully powdery and dry.
