Car Travel

A car is your best bet for getting to and around the region. Interstate 40 heads due west from Albuquerque toward Arizona. U.S. 64 leads west from Taos into northwestern New Mexico and east from Arizona. U.S. 550 travels to the northwest from Interstate 25 (15 miles north of Albuquerque), intersecting with U.S. 64 at Bloomfield, 14 miles east of Farmington. Road conditions vary with the seasons. Winter can create snowy, icy roads; summer can bring ferocious thunderstorms, hailstorms, and flash-flood warnings. Any back-roads driving warrants a vehicle with high clearance. You can rent a car from Avis, Budget, or Hertz at the Farmington airport. Budget has an office at the Gallup airport; Enterprise has a location in town.
