Las Vegas

Vegas is an international shopping destination. The square footage in The Forum Shops at Caesars alone makes it some of the most valuable retail real estate in the country; bankrolls are dropped there as readily as on the gaming tables. It's the variety that has pushed Las Vegas near the ranks of New York City, London, and Rome: you could send home a vintage slot machine or tote back a classic Hermès handbag.

Most Strip hotels offer designer dresses, swimsuits, jewelry, and menswear; almost all have shops offering logo merchandise for the hotel or its latest show. Inside the casinos the gifts are often elegant and exquisite. Outside, all the Elvis clocks and gambling-chip toilet seats you never wanted to see are available in the tacky gift shops. Beyond the Strip, shopping in Vegas can encompass such extremes as finding a couture ball gown in a vintage store and, in a Western store, a fine pair of Tony Lama boots left over from the town's cowboy days. Shoppers looking for more practical items can head for neighborhood malls, supermarkets, shopping centers, and specialty stores. Bargain-hunters seeking to avoid the stratospheric prices on the Strip, and not averse to traveling a bit, can usually find the same high-ticket items at discounted prices in the local or nearby factory outlet malls.

  • 1. Eataly

Take some time to "eat, shop, and learn" (their tagline) at this vast Italian marketplace, an Italian grocery and food hall that occupies the main entrance to Park MGM. What are you eating, shopping, and learning about? A 12-seat Chef's Table allows guests to pay for a dining and learning experience with some of Eataly's great Italian chefs. Perhaps the highlight of the experience is a modest gift shop and extensive market that sells a variety of goods imported straight from the motherland. But visitors may be more interested in the Cucina del Mercato, numerous food stalls that serve everything from wine and cheese to meats, pizza, pasta, gelato, and Italian pastries. Other highlights, mi amore? Eyeball a replica of the famous bull mosaic in Milan (said to bestow good luck); drink wine poured "on tap"; sample the goodies at the Nutella counter (serving crepes, cookies, and croissants); and even purchase souvenir poker chips (sporting symbols of espresso, gelato, pizza, and Parmigiano Reggiano). And it's open until 2 am Fridays and Saturdays.

  • 2. Fashion Show Las Vegas

    North Strip

The frontage of this fashion-devoted mall is dominated by The Cloud—a giant, oblong disc that looms high above the entrance. Ads and footage of the mall's own fashion events are periodically projected across the expanse of this ovoid screen. Inside, the mall is sleek, spacious, and airy—a nice change from some of the claustrophobic casino malls. The mall delivers on its name: fashion shows are staged in the Great Hall on an 80-foot-long catwalk that rises from the floor (on select weekends). Although you can find many of the same stores in the casino malls, there's a smattering of different fare, such as Drybar, which specializes in blowouts; Lolli & Pops, "purveyors of sweetness;" and the only LEGO store in the valley. Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macy's, Dillard's, and Forever 21 serve as the mall's anchors. Along with an airy food court, dependable chains, including The Capital Grille, Maggiano's, Benihana, and California Pizza Kitchen, offer sit-down dining. There's even a Hello Kitty Café!

Shop for rare coins, first-edition books, and jewelry and watches galore, including Super Bowl rings or that special piece of history you saw on the show. With ever-changing stock, you never know what you will see. Because the shop doubles as a TV set, lines to get in can get long, and the store is open 24/7. • 4. Grand Canal Shoppes

    North Strip

This is one of the most unforgettable shopping experiences on the Strip. Duck into shops like Field of Dreams, Sephora, or Peter Lik's gallery of fine-art photography. Amble under blue-sky ceilings alongside the Grand Canal. All roads, balustraded bridges, and waterways lead to St. Mark's Square, an enormous open space filled with Italian opera singers and costumed performers. Watch for the living statues, who will intrigue and amuse. If you need to take a load off, hail a gondola. Closer to The Palazzo, find powerhouse names such as Michael Kors and Tory Burch; shoe lovers will swoon over the Jimmy Choo boutique.

  • 5. Las Vegas North Premium Outlets

    Downtown

The upscale mix at this racetrack-shape Downtown outlet mall includes 175 stores, all of which offer merchandise discounts of some sort. Some of the stores are fairly common, including Sketchers, Charlotte Russe, and Aeropostale. Others, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Kate Spade New York, Ted Baker London, Tory Burch, and Salvatore Ferragamo, are more high-fashion. Saks Off Fifth and a giant Nike store anchor the mall, and a Cheesecake Factory restaurant offers a good place to have lunch. This is one of the few outdoor malls in town, and it offers plenty of shade as well as misting towers to help keep you cool in the Vegas heat. Three parking garages afford easy access to the mall but tend to fill up quickly; valet parking is available in the main garage.

  • 6. The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace

    Center Strip

Amazing ambience, architecture, and design means visitors won't have to drop a single dime to enjoy touring this highly accessible mid-Strip mall. Leave the high heels at home to better roam the three levels of restaurants and retail—some paths are cobblestoned—that resemble an ancient Roman streetscape, with scattered statuary, immense columns and arches, two central piazzas with ornate fountains, and a cloud-filled ceiling-sky that changes from sunrise to sunset over the course of three hours (to subconsciously spur shoppers to step up their pace of acquisition, perhaps?). The Mitsubishi-designed freestanding Spiral Escalator is a must-ride for the view. Of course, shopaholics will rejoice at the selection of designer shops and traditional standbys, from high-end heavy hitters, such as Burberry, Brooks Brothers, Gucci, Fendi, Michael Kors, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Salvatore Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton, and Balenciaga, to more casual labels like Nike, Guess, H&M, and Brighton. Armani fans will find an Exchange for menswear, along with John Varvatos, Psycho Bunny, and Canali. Gaze at stunning jewelry, watches, and crystal works at Baccarat, Swarovski, Tourneau, Tiffany & Co., Pandora, and David Yurman. Apple offers a whole host of electronics. And don't miss the flagship Victoria's Secret for lingerie and swimwear, or Agent Provocateur. When all this walking/shopping brings on the inevitable hunger, head to the renovated The Palm or Carmine's Italian. The Cheesecake Factory is popular, as are Sushi Roku and Joe's Seafood, Steak & Stone Crab.

  • 7. The Shops at Crystals

    Center Strip

Two levels of opulent boutiques, restaurants, and artistic flourishes are housed within the dramatic steel-and-glass structure that envelops The Shops at Crystals shopping venue at ARIA Campus. True to its gleaming facade, scads of swanky designer apparel and accessories from fashion's crème de la crème line the clean, minimalist confines within. Touch-screen directories guide you to brands such as Prada, Bulgari, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Stella McCartney, Chanel, and Tom Ford. Come dressed to impress if you intend to do anything more than ogle the latest and greatest offerings; some of the salespeople here can be more haughty than the couture. One of Louis Vuitton's largest locations in North America is here, with two levels that extend beyond leather goods to include men and women's ready-to-wear, shoes, jewelry, textiles, ties, and more. After a long day of shopping, catch dinner at Mastro's Ocean Club (sitting inside a tree house). Afterward, stroll outdoors to cross the Sky Bridge to see the 4-ton sculpture of a blue-and-red typewriter eraser by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. For a fun way to access The Shops at Crystals, ride the sleek and silent Aria Express, the Campus's free electric tram with a fantastic elevated view of the complex.

  • 10. Appian Way Shops

    Center Strip

A majestic replica of Michelangelo's David in Carrara marble marks the entrance to the Appian Way Shops, which are fronted by a massive King Baby, with its wealth of rock-and-roll handcrafted sterling silver pieces with elements of precious stones. Carina can spiff up your wardrobe with brands such as Joseph Ribkoff, Miss Me, and Alberto Makali. Misura fills the same niche for men, with fashions and accessories from brands including Hugo Boss, Fossil, and Tommy Bahama. If you work up an appetite while shopping, know that the Appian Way Shops is bookended by temptations—at one end stands Aubi & Ramsa, offering alcohol-infused ice cream for those 21 and older, and at the other Dominique Ansel, with pastries and sandwiches. Nobu's just across the Appian Way.

  • 14. Bonanza "World's Largest Gift Shop"

    North Strip

Okay, so it may not, in fact, be the world's largest, but at more than 40,000 square feet, it's Vegas's largest souvenir store. And although it carries most of the usual junk, this peddler of pop-culture kitsch also stocks some most unusual junk. A pair of fuzzy pink dice? Check. Blinking "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign? Check. Elvis aviator sunglasses complete with black sideburns? Check. How about a battery-operated parrot with a potty mouth or a 3-inch plastic slot machine that squirts water? They're all found here, seven days a week, from 8 am to midnight. Check out an area of the store that contains Elvis and Marilyn Monroe gifts. As Bonanza likes to say, "If it's in stock, we have it."

  • 16. Boulevard Mall

Like many an indoor mall, Las Vegas's first (it opened in 1968) was in danger of becoming a "ghost mall" before new owners began a transformation. Bygone anchor stores such as Sears and Dillards were replaced with more activity- and entertainment-oriented draws: a Galaxy cineplex touting the city's largest indoor movie screen, a SeaQuest Aquarium, and John's Incredible Pizza, overflowing with rides and bumper cars. The latest addition plays to the changing demographics of the neighborhood: the Mercado is a separately themed area styled like a street market, hosting small-business food and retail vendors.
