The stunning mountain backdrop to the town of Livingston was once Crow territory, and a chief called Arapooish said about it, "The Crow country is good country. The Great Spirit has put it in exactly the right place. When you are in it, you fare well; when you go out of it, you fare worse."
Livingston, along the banks of the beautiful Yellowstone River, was built to serve the railroad and the settlers it brought. The railroad still runs through this town of around 7,800, but now tourism and outdoor sports dominate the scene. Many writers and artists call Livingston home, and there are some 15 art galleries here. Robert Redford chose the town, with its turn-of-the-20th-century flavor, to film parts of the movie A River Runs Through It.
