Fodor's Expert Review Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center

201 Lafayette St., Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70801, USA

A fitness center and many other amenities make this historic riverside landmark a popular choice for business people and conventioneers. The former Heidelberg Hotel, downtown and less than a mile from the capitol and adjacent to the Shaw Performing Arts Center, was central to Louisiana's colorful political history. It once served briefly as the impromptu seat of government for Huey Long's would-be successor, Paul Cyr, when Long refused to turn over the governorship after his election to the U.S. Senate, and Long himself kept a suite of rooms here.

PROS

  • spectacular view of the river
  • near all the downtown sites
  • next to Shaw Performing Arts Center, access to great arts and restaurants

CONS

  • generic businesslike surroundings
  • can get crowded during conventions
  • must pay $28/night for valet parking if you bring a car
