Why We Like It

For the rate you really can't find anything better in this part of town which is scant with hotels to begin with. Sure, you don't have a gym or pool or restaurant but this only means you have more time to explore the neighborhood's nightlife and dining scene. Traveling downtown is a breeze due to convenient public-transit lines on the L as well as access to Uber and Lyft drivers.

Fodor's Expert Review

European travelers love this hotel for its residential feel. Totally reimagined in 2014, rooms boast bright colors plus midcentury-inspired accents. Two-thirds of the rooms (considered suites) have sitting areas with pull-out couches. The Boystown neighborhood is a favorite with young people. Amenities include complimentary Continental breakfast, afternoon cookies, tea and coffee all day and access to a nearby health club.

You Should Know Proximity to the L train is both a blessing and a curse. You'll have easy access to downtown and the North Side, but the rumbling noise might be a pain at night.

Room

Bright colors (turquoise, purple and yellow) and tweed furniture perk up the spacious rooms, which feature a nod to Art Deco design along with a desk that’s suited to working while on the road. A mini-fridge ensures that chilled beer or a bottle of wine are close at hand. If you need to spread out or are traveling in a group, then a suite (with a pull-out sofa) is the way to go.

Tip Ask for a microwave oven for your room to help cure midnight munchies or heat up leftovers.

Bathroom

White walls and fixtures, with black-and-white tiled showers and subway-inspired wall art channel the urban, historic setting right outside the hotel’s front door. Bulk toiletries speak to the hotel’s attempts to be green whenever possible.

Lobby

While the hotel lobby's primary function is to welcome and check in guests, it's also like coming home to your urban pad. Just look for the black awning on the street level of this brick building, which also features a design shop next door. Armchairs encircle the crackling fireplace in the lobby, which is a great place to cozy up with a book or wait for your room to be ready.

Dining

Included with all rates is a complimentary continental breakfast which is more than a pastry and coffee. Instead, you get a variety of items like yogurt, bagels and hard-boiled eggs, plus orange juice. It may not tide you over until an early dinner but it's a great start to the day without leaving the hotel.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Although the $25 parking rate is a deep dive from what you'd pay downtown, you just might end up circling the block once you arrive at your destination, so it may not be worth it to have a car during your stay. Uber and Lyft drivers are always in the area and there are quite a few L stops near the hotel that can whisk you downtown and to the Loop with ease.

Restaurants

It would practically be a crime to not experience Chicago's deep-dish style pizza and fortunately, there is an outpost of a well-liked local chain near the hotel: Giordano's (3-minute walk). Craving sushi? Ukai Sushi's (4-minute walk) executive chef cut his chops at restaurants in Los Angeles and New York City before opening this place.

Bars

Matilda is a quirky neighborhood dive bar around the corner from the hotel (4-minute walk) also serving snacks like bacon-fat popcorn and beer knots (fresh-out-of-the-oven pretzels). Catch a retro movie over beer at The Brew & View (2-minute walk), a neighborhood institution inside the Vic Theatre.
