Why We Like It

The units at this intimate condo property are well-priced and have wonderful views. The whole property has nice views that include the occasional whale during the right season, and a very relaxed vibe. A beach with plenty of turtles is only a short walk away, and plenty of restaurants are a short drive away. It has the wonderful combination of being private and serene while still being close to lots of amenities.

Fodor's Expert Review

Of the many condo complexes lining the ocean-side stretch of Honoapiilani Highway, this one offers friendly service, a saline oceanfront pool, and affordable units—some with million-dollar views. You won't be charged for parking or local phone calls, and discount car rentals are available. Most of the individually owned one- and two-bedroom units have been renovated to include flat-screen TVs and granite countertops in the kitchens. The interiors tend to be charming "old Hawaii" (lots of rattan furniture, silk flowers, and decorative items). This quiet, older complex is a short stroll away from Honokowai's grocery store, beaches, and restaurants.

Tip To find the ideal unit for you and your group, look into each unit on the website, read individual reviews of the units, and call management to learn more about the unit you’re interested in. If you need specifics like more modern amenities and decor, they can steer you in the right direction.

Room

These one- and two-bedroom vacation condos are individually owned and decorated, with one-bedroom units (sleeps 4) on the first floor and two-bedroom units (sleeps 6) on the second floor. Each unit has the same layout, but features are based on owner, so guests should be sure to look at each unit online. It’s a small property with only 56 units, all of which are ocean-view.

You Should Know The floor between the units doesn’t filter out sound very well, so the lower units tend to hear a lot of what is going on upstairs. If you’re a light sleeper, you may want to pack some earplugs.

Bathroom

Each one-bedroom unit has one bathroom, and each two-bedroom unit has two bathrooms. Bathrooms are a decent size, though the sink, toilet, and shower kind of sit on top of one another and can be cramped. Most units have stand-up showers. Decor and fixtures differ based on owner.

Lobby

Mahina Surf’s office is located adjacent to the units, an easy walk from any of them.

Pool

The centerpiece of this well-designed property is the beautiful salt water pool, heated by solar panels. It is a nice size, rectangular in shape, surrounded by plenty of loungers and green grass, and has spectacular ocean views.

Dining

There is no on-site dining, but each unit has a kitchen, and the property has a lovely grill area with three large grills overlooking the ocean.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

It’s easy (and preferable) to explore Maui’s smaller towns by foot, but to get to them and around the island, you’ll need to rent a car. If you plan on exploring the Road to Hana, get something with a little extra horsepower (but not too big as the road can get very narrow).

Restaurants

Star Noodle (11-min drive) is a favorite among locals and visitors, a place where creative chefs integrate new ideas into old dishes. The family-style concept is applied to the tasty plates that illustrate a Maui twist on Asian classics. Fish, pork, and of course noodles dominate the menu, but there are definitely plenty of veggie options, along with vibrant cocktails and mocktails made with fresh-pressed juices.

Enjoy a great meal in a fun, relaxed atmosphere at Down the Hatch (12-min drive). This self-service restaurant is a favorite among locals and tourists, loved as much for its vibe as for its drinks and food. The southern aloha spirit runs strong with friendly staff and a menu that features heavily on fish and seafood, particularly in sandwich and taco form, but also includes specialties like chicken & waffles. Those looking for a plant-based option won’t be able to get enough of their sweet potato tacos. It’s one of two restaurants in Lahaina that stays open until midnight. Round your meal out with a refreshing treat from sister company (in the same courtyard) Hawaii Shave Ice Co.

Bars

Find a daily happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m., live music from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday through Monday, and trivia nights on Wednesday at family-friendly Pour House (6-min drive) that features cocktails, beer, and an extensive wine list.

Monkeypod (8-min drive) has some really great food, with a focus on local products that create a variety of appetizers, pizzas, noodles, salads, and seafood dishes in a fun, family-friendly environment. Their newest location in Whaler’s Village has two daily happy hours from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m., as well as live music most days -- performances start at 1, 4, and 7 p.m.
