Planning Your Time

As a transportation hub, Atlanta is the jumping-off point for this region. In fact, many of North and Central Georgia's attractions are little more than an hour's drive from the city, making them perfect for a day trip. Panning for gold in Dahlonega, apple picking in Ellijay, and sampling North Georgia wines are worthy excursions. For a more relaxed pace, plan to stay overnight in the beautiful North Georgia mountains.

The bustling college town of Athens is a great place to start if you are interested in exploring the Antebellum Trail winding through Madison, Milledgeville, and Macon. With so much to do and see, consider breaking up the trip with an overnight stay. These cities also stand alone as day-trip destinations or overnight trips, particularly if history and architecture are of interest.
