Why We Like It

Historic bones and a commitment to service make this intimate hotel near Union Square a reasonable option for business travelers.

Fodor's Expert Review

Two blocks west of Union Square, this Queen Anne–style abode began its life in 1904 as the Sultan Turkish Baths; today rooms are tight but well decorated, and the friendly staff goes out of its way for guests. An on-site restaurant, complimentary morning treats, and afternoon wine adds to the allure.

You Should Know The hotel does not have A/C, but in San Francisco, there are typically only a couple days a year you might desire additional cooling.

Room

Rooms feature Victorian reproductions, ceiling fans, old-fashioned floral curtains with lace sheers, and iron bedsteads draped with soft bedding. Guest rooms include small flat-screen TVs and leather chaises and have large closets.

Bathroom

Tight bathrooms dressed in white unfortunately do not feature spa-like appeal. However, pristine tiling, eco-friendly bath amenities, and good water pressure do the job.

Lobby

The lobby—dominated by a huge Elliott grandfather clock and the original cage-style elevator—is inhabited by a kind staff.

Dining

A welcoming breakfast, including local Graffeo coffee and Bakers of Paris pastries, is displayed on each floor for guests to take back to rooms. Fino, the hotel restaurant, gets rave reviews from guests for its splendid service and delicious Italian fare.

Drinking

Complimentary wine is served each evening in the lobby.
