Fodor's Expert Review Colony Palms Hotel

572 N. Indian Canyon Dr., Palm Springs, California, 92262, USA

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

This hotel has been a hip place to stay since the 1930s, when gangster Al Wertheimer built it to front his casino, bar, and brothel; it later became the Howard Hotel, owned by local luminaries Robert Stewart Howard (his dad owned the fabled racehorse Seabiscuit) and actress Andrea Leeds (the couple hosted a young Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, and Liberace), and today it still attracts a younger crowd. The rooms, created by A-list designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, are quasi-Moroccan with brilliantly colored mosaic tiles and fabrics, rich woods, and black-and-white vintage movie star photos everywhere. Many have fireplaces and in-room whirlpool tubs.

PROS

  • rooms open to pool and gardens in the central courtyard
  • attentive staff
  • fireplaces and whirlpool tubs in many rooms

CONS

  • high noise level outside
  • some rooms need updating
  • service sometimes inconsistent
