Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Victoria

56 Yonge St., Toronto, Ontario, M5E 1G5, Canada

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

A local landmark built in 1909, "the Vic" is Toronto's second-oldest hotel, with a long-standing reputation for excellent service. Architectural traces of the early 20th century are evident in the columned and marbled lobby, stately crown moldings, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Rooms are rather small but clean and comfortable with crisp white linens, pillow-top mattresses, splashes of black and gold, and smartly tiled bathrooms. Over Easy, the lobby restaurant, does breakfast and lunch, but closes mid-afternoon (a potential drawback for night owls).

PROS

  • gym privileges at nearby health club
  • stylishly decorated rooms
  • lobby restaurant is fantastic

CONS

  • inconvenient off-site parking
  • front rooms get street noise
  • not all rooms get newspapers
