Fodor's Expert Review Inn at Tough City

350 Main St., Tofino, British Columbia, V0R 2Z0, Canada

Vintage furnishings and First Nations art make this harborside redbrick two-star inn funky, if a bit cluttered. The name is derived from Tofino's old nickname, when life here was pretty rough and ready, though it certainly isn't any longer. Guest rooms have stained-glass windows, hardwood floors, well-chosen antiques, and decks or balconies. Several have views over Tofino Harbour and Clayoquot Sound. The hotel's water-view restaurant, Tough City Sushi, uses fresh local seafood.

PROS

  • prime Tofino location
  • loads of character
  • eclectic furnishings

CONS

  • the lobby is small and noisy
  • front-desk staffing friendly but inconsistent
  • a bit cluttered
