Fodor's Expert Review El Refugio La Brisa Del Diablo

Valle Hornito, Chiriquí, Panama

This little stone B&B on the main road between Bocas and David looks like something out of a fairytale, with views stretching from the Pacific coast to Volcán Barú, often framed by cotton clouds and double rainbows. The cozy home has a fireplace lounge, reading nook, swimming pool, and restaurant operated by renowned owner-chef Olga Lanctot. The two rooms are bright and colorful with polished concrete floors, wood-beamed ceilings, blue tiled bathrooms, and private terraces with hammocks. Beside the B&B is a three-bedroom house with a full kitchen, ideal for families seeking privacy. Lush grounds have mulberry trees and Gaisha coffee plants that make their way to the breakfast table, along with homemade yogurt, crepes, and omelets. A fixed four-course dinner is available for $30, and tours–– ranging from horseback riding to hot spring excursions––can be arranged upon request.
