Boat Travel

If you choose not to fly, getting to and between the Bay Islands means boat travel. MV Galaxy Wave travels twice daily in each direction between La Ceiba and Roatán. The Utila Princess II travels twice daily in each direction between La Ceiba and Utila. Bolea Express, a private speedboat service, operates twice weekly between Trujillo and Guanaja. You can arrange private boat transport between the three islands themselves. The boat trips are far cheaper than the flights, of course, but notorious at times for their rough crossings. The morning seas are calmer than the afternoon ones if you have a choice. If you are the least bit prone to motion sickness, you'll want to bring along a preventative such as Dramamine or Bonine (both are over-the-counter back home) or the prescription transdermal-scopolamine patch. Remember that you need to take the measures in advance—once seasickness starts, they are of little use—and that drowsiness is a possible side effect, especially from the tablets.
