Manatee Spotting

Several operators do boat trips to see West Indian manatees. The 9,000-acre Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 2002 in great part due to the efforts of Chocolate Heredia, who sadly passed away in 2013, and his wife Annie Seashore, is home to many of these endangered mammals. It’s just 10 minutes by boat from Caye Caulker. It's illegal in Belize to get into the water with the gentle sea cows, but a few tour operators unfortunately do permit it. Half-day tours typically cost around BZ$100 per person, including the BZ$10 sanctuary admission fee. Some stop at Goff's Caye, which has excellent snorkeling.

Caveman Snorkeling Tours. Caveman and staff are known for sensitivity to the marine ecosystem, playful attitudes, and vigilance in giving you the best experience. A daylong manatee-watching tour, combined with snorkeling spots, is about BZ$180 per person, including lunch, gear, and park fees. Very navigable website and booking options. Av. Hicaco, Caye Caulker, Belize District.
