Set well back from the road and surrounded by gardens, this grande dame maintains an unruffled sense of calm, but the rooms inside—while tastefully decorated and with views of either the mountains or the river—have seen better days. Market-fresh cuisine is served in the hearth-warmed restaurant or on the enchanting summer terrace. There's a lovely indoor pool along with a sauna, steam bath, treatment rooms, and fitness center. The location, close to the Interlaken Ost train station, is ideal.
