Why We Like It

This no-frills family-run hotel offers quite a lot of space for not that much money considering the location.

Fodor's Expert Review

Individually decorated (though dated) rooms, a cobblestone street out front, and a busy adjoining square all lend a Montmartre-like flair to this cheap and cheerful little getaway close to Rembrandtplein. But while this hotel has a central location to its advantage, the rooms need a refurb (the public areas were being refurbished at the time of going to press and rooms are scheduled for a refresh in 2019).

You Should Know Due to the recent hotel boom, there are now also affordable boutique hotel options available in the area for the same or (considerably) less that actually offer more for your money in terms of style and/or facilities. May we suggest The Albus or Hotel V Frederiksplein instead?

Room

Relatively large rooms are functionally decorated with old-fashioned furnishings, but the beds have new Auping mattresses. Amenities include free WiFi, flat-screen TVs with international channels, and a universal adapter plug. Coffee/tea making facilities don’t come standard but can be arranged.

Tip Since the hotel is located on a street with lots of late-night bars and restaurants, request a room toward the back if you're a light sleeper.

Bathroom

Small en-suite bathrooms feature walk-in showers and all the basic amenities.

Tip A hairdryer is available upon request.

Lobby

Up some stairs, you’ll find the 24-hour reception desk.

You Should Know There is no elevator, though the stairs are wider and easier to navigate than the steep, narrow staircases in many Amsterdam hotels. You do have to climb up at least two flights to get to your room, though.

Dining

The breakfast room is currently undergoing renovations so guests are given a small reimbursement towards their breakfast somewhere else.

Drinking

The public areas of this hotel are currently undergoing renovations, but there are plenty of options in the direct vicinity of this hotel.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Located in the heart of the Old Center, this hotel offers good access to just about all the sights on foot. Metro and tram access is available at nearby Rembrandtplein.

Restaurants

Why not try Indonesian rijsttafel (“rice table”) a feast of flavors from the Netherlands’ favorite adopted cuisine at Tempo Doeloe (5-minute walk)? Or, for a cheap and cheerful (but very good) Greek gyros meal, there’s Meat & Greek (6-minute walk). You can go Dutch–at least as far as cuisine type is concerned–at Restaurant Lt. Cornelis (7-minute walk).

Bars

To sample a slice of local history, an 8-minute walk will take you to Café Oosterling, which has been owned by the Oosterling family since 1897. If you find yourself wondering why the bar’s so low, it was originally used as a shop counter to trade coffee, tea, and spices from the Dutch East India Company. If you’re looking for the convivial atmosphere of a typical Dutch “brown café”, there’s Café De Wetering (a 12-minute walk).
