Why We Like It

We’re not sure we do, but Hotel Atlas does offer cheap rooms in a safe area ideal for culture trips, and staff are unfailingly friendly.

Fodor's Expert Review

This beautiful Art Nouveau mansion offers easy access to Vondelpark, which is right next door, and the museums.

You Should Know While the original features are stunning, the interior of the hotel is looking tired. Frankly, there are better options for the same budget in the area, including boutique options such as Hotel Vondel.

Room

Dark, dated, and sometimes musty-smelling guest rooms are in need of a refresh, but the fresh fruit basket and wine in every room is a nice touch.

Bathroom

The bathrooms are cramped and basic.

Lobby

The lobby is quite standard, but the hotel staff are unfailingly cheerful and exceptionally helpful. Plus, there’s a TV lounge to relax in.

Tip To save on a taxi, catch Bus 197 from Schiphol International Airport. Get off at the Willemsparkweg/Museumplein stop, which is only a short walk from the hotel.

Dining

A Continental breakfast is served in the breakfast room, but you’ll have to head outside for lunch or dinner.

Drinking

There’s no on-site bar, but plenty of options in the area.

Getting Around

The well-to-do neighborhood is within walking distance of the main museums and some nice bars and restaurants. Located next to Vondelpark, this hotel offers good access to Oud Zuid, the Canal Belt and the west side on foot. Trams are available at nearby Van Baerlestraat.

Restaurants

Sustainable seafood specialist The Seafood Bar (6-minute walk) offers smoked fish varieties from Volendam, delicately-battered fish and chips, four varieties of oyster and extravagant platters of fruits de mer. Sample some of the best fries in the city at Frietboutique (7-minute walk), which also offers excellent ice cream. Or soak up some authentic Art Deco atmosphere at Café Americain (14-minute walk) while tucking into “accessible brasserie classics with a twist”.

Bars

Popular café Gollem’s Proeflokaal, a dark and cozy Belgian beer café with more than 180 bottled brews and 22 on tap, is a 9-minute walk away. If you’re looking for the convivial atmosphere of a typical Dutch “brown café”, there’s Café De Wetering (16-minute walk).
