Fodor's Expert Review Grand Hotel dei Castelli
Via Penisola di Levante 26, Liguria, 16039, Italy
You can see the Baia delle Favole from this castle-turned-hotel on a promontory, and you just might feel you've been transported to a fairy tale here. Much of the stonework used to construct the main building and dining/bar area in the 1900s was sourced from an 11th-century castle that once stood nearby. The spiral marble staircase is impressive, and many of the rooms are regal with mahogany and velvet furniture; the palatial sitting areas have Roman-like statues. There are gardens and walking paths to stroll, and even a “sea pool”—a private inlet with exclusive guest access. Rooms in the main building have more character.
PROS
- grand setting with spectacular views of the two bays
- beautiful grounds
- private inlet
CONS
- some rooms and public areas have a dated feel
- steep walk (or slow elevator) down to the beach
- guests are charged for access to private beach
