The village of Vatera is all about its 9-km-long (5½-mile-long) sandy strip of sparkling water, lined with tamarisk trees and framed by green hills. You can sit and enjoy the view of the cape of Ayios Fokas, with its excavated Temple of Dionysus. As is often the case in succeeding cultures, the temple's marble fragments were recycled, built into the center aisle of a Christian basilica.
