Fodor's Expert Review The Merchant's House

Corfu, Greece Fodor's Choice

Owners Mark and Saskia have created their luxurious B&B from one of Perithia's former ruins, with a sensitive and stylish renovation of the old stone structure. The location in Old Perithia, a once-abandoned Byzantine settlement, is a heritage-protected village deep in the mountains and far from anywhere else, but the surrounding mountains are ideal hiking country, and there are nearby tavernas that serve traditional food. As much as possible, furnishings and fittings have been sourced from around Greece, and most of the breakfast foodstuffs come from the immediate vicinity. Accommodations are mostly in spacious suites, all with separate entrances direct to the garden; modern amenities include Wi-Fi, an in-room coffeemaker and air-conditioning. Breakfast, featuring local honey and homemade jam, is served on the terrace overlooking the lower part of the village.

PROS

  • perfect for lovers of nature
  • warm and helpful personal service
  • homemade sourdough bread and jams for breakfast

CONS

  • no swimming pool due to heritage surroundings
  • the village, though isolated, can be busy with day-trippers
  • hair-raising drive to get here
