Fodor's Expert Review The Grand, York

Station Rise, York, York, Y01 6GD, England Fodor's Choice

This handsome, comfortable hotel near the train station—not surprising, considering it was formerly the headquarters of the regional railroad—was built in 1906 and retains many original features, such as solid mahogany doors, beautiful tilework on the stairwells, and art nouveau ironwork. Spacious bedrooms are sleek and contemporary, with king-size beds, good soundproofing, and well-equipped bathrooms with underfloor heating. The excellent Hudsons restaurant serves an inventive take on modern British classics like game pie with red cabbage as part of a tasting menu while the more casual Rise serves tapas-style small plates. There's also a highly proficient spa with a pool. The total effect is luxurious but down-to-earth—a city hotel par excellence.
