The busy passenger port of Dover has for centuries been Britain's gateway to Europe and is known for the famous white cliffs. The town itself is, sadly, not a pretty place; the savage bombardments of World War II and the shortsightedness of postwar developers left the city center in something of a mess. Mostly Dover town is a place you go through to get to the ferry. However, there are a couple of notable exceptions, including the Roman-era legacy of a lighthouse adjoining a stout Anglo-Saxon church.
