Planning Your Time

The South has no obvious hub, though many people base themselves in one or both of the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury and make excursions to nearby destinations. The coastal cities of Portsmouth and Southampton have their charms, but neither of these large urban centers is particularly attractive as an overnight stop. Busy Bournemouth, whose major sight is a Victorian-era museum, has quieter areas that are more conducive to relaxation. To escape the bustle, the New Forest, southwest of Southampton, has space and semi-wilderness. It's easy to take a morning or afternoon break to enjoy the available activities, whether on foot, bike, or horseback. The Isle of Wight needs more time and is worth exploring at leisure over at least a couple of days.
