Fodor's Expert Review Priory Bay Hotel

Priory Dr., Seaview, Isle of Wight, PO34 5BU, England Fodor's Choice

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

This country-house hotel has architectural flourishes that date back to Tudor times, 60 acres of grounds, and its own private sandy beach. It may not appeal to those who like their hotels bright and shiny, but fans of the upper-crust shabby chic style—such as supermodel guest Kate Moss—love it. Antiques furnish the public rooms, and light fills the upscale, atmospheric guest rooms (standard rooms are a bit undistinguished). There are also eight 1980s cottages and two thatched barns suitable for families, but adventurous travelers might prefer the three luxury yurts dotted around the grounds, all with soft beds, full bathrooms, and butler service. The Island Room restaurant serves sophisticated seasonal cuisine with influences from around Europe; in summer you can dine less formally at the Priory Oyster restaurant, which has a terrace overlooking the sea and the six-hole golf course.
