Fodor's Expert Review The Manor House Hotel
Crown St., Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 0EJ, England
Built in 1847, this historic property was originally called "the Grecian Villa,” which gives you an idea of its style. Its centerpiece is an elegant wood-paneled spiral staircase. No two guest rooms are alike, and they incorporate many of the building's original architectural features as well as modern comforts.
PROS
- grand Georgian architecture
- impressive spiral staircase
- central location
CONS
- decor and furniture a bit dated
- some rooms have only skylights, not windows
- not the most attractive surroundings
