Getting Oriented Outside of Prague

Prague is undeniably a showstopper. But to really experience the Czech Republic, you’ve got to get out of the city, and luckily it’s an easy feat. A plethora of sights surround the capital city, whether you're looking for something medieval, majestic, or even macabre. In a couple of hours or less you’ll have forgotten the cramped city and be lost in the rolling countryside or admiring the glorious castles and cathedrals.

Prague’s public transport system can deliver you to any of these destinations any day of the week, and some can even be reached by boat in summer. Car rentals are simple to set up. Or make it easy on yourself and book a day tour. Any way you choose, a side trip into Bohemia is a worthy addition to any Prague itinerary.

  • Kutná Hora. From the downright macabre to the simply lovely; in Kutná Hora you can see a church of bones, a majestic cathedral, and an attractive Czech town.
  • Karlštejn. The quickest castle excursion from Prague can get mobbed but ticks all the European fairy-tale castle boxes you could ask for.
  • Křivoklát. Take yourself back in time at this evocative castle, complete with a torture-chamber tour.
  • Mělník. A lovely town, a lazy river, and a glass of delicious local wine. What more could you ask for?
  • Český Šternberk. Go way out of Prague and be impressed by this massive castle perched over the river.
  • Konopiště Castle. With a moat of bears, a hall of horns, and an untamed park, the surroundings of this castle really deliver.
  • Lidice. This village is a haunting memorial to the horrors of World War II.
  • Terezín. A trip to this city is emotional and educational—a glimpse into a former WWII Jewish ghetto and concentration camp.
