Fodor's Expert Review Löwen Hotel
Silvrettastrasse 8, Schruns, Vorarlberg, A-6780, Austria
This enormous hotel looms over the heart of Schruns, but step inside and you'll find a welcoming (if not exactly intimate) place; a modern take on a traditional Austrian abode, with the rustic dark-wood theme carried elegantly through into the comfortable rooms. The hotel is in the center of a grassy garden platform, which forms a greenbelt around the main building and serves as a roof for the ground-floor pool and restaurants. The excellent Löwen Stube restaurant, with its graceful table settings and candlelight, offers a choice of six- and seven-course menus that artfully blend international fare with regional specialties, though it's only open for dinner Thursday through Saturday. For lunch or dinner on weekdays, try the hotel's other dining option, Restaurant Barga, which serves à la carte Austrian cuisine at less inflated prices.
PROS
- spacious and luxurious
- enormous spa including a women-only section
- glorious scenic setting
CONS
- atmosphere can feel a bit formal
- large size means no sense of intimacy
- some feel it lacks Austrian tradition
