Fodor's Expert Review Lisburn House
15 Lisburn Ave., Dunedin, Otago, 9012, New Zealand
This Victorian-Gothic house, one of the finest built in 1860s Dunedin, is a romantic retreat set amid lovingly tended gardens and shows off such original details as decorative Irish brickwork, fishtail slate roof tiles, high, molded-plaster ceilings, and an impressive turn-of-the-20th-century stained-glass entrance. All bedrooms have four-poster queen beds; all have private baths, but all but one are reached from the hallway. A welcoming fire crackles in the lounge, where guests can read, listen to music, or watch TV, and there's free Wi-Fi throughout. In-house Claddagh Restaurant offers prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus and an extensive wine list.
