Whether surfing or just enjoying the harbor, spare at least a couple of days for Raglan, another day or two for exploring the Waitomo Caves. Cambridge also warrants a day, perhaps en route to Rotorua. From Waitomo travel southwest to Taranaki, where two to three days would allow exploration of the gardens and museums, plus a beach trip and a short walk in Egmont National Park—allow longer for more serious hiking, climbing, or surfing adventures. Wanganui city is worth a day or two. A river jet-boat or road trip provides a quick glimpse of the area; for an in-depth tour try a five-day kayak journey, then take a good day or two to absorb the university town of Palmerston North before heading on south to Wellington.
