Geoje Island

Before 2010, Geoje Island was only accessible from Busan via ferry or a circuitous land route that went through the cities of Changwon, Masan, and Tongyeong. This all changed with the construction of the Geoga Bridge, an 8.2-km (5.1-mile) link of spans and tunnels that put Geoje within quick reach of South Korea's second city, shortening the trip some 60 km (37 miles). Since then the island has become a favorite weekend getaway for Busanites.

As one of the country's centers of shipbuilding, the northern part of Geoje (around Geoje City) is quite urbanized and industrial. Once you head to the southern half, however, you quickly feel the island's draw. Geoje is home to clean, aquamarine waters, imposing rock formations, hidden beaches, lovely fishing villages, and islands within in a quick boat ride from the main landmass. Though the area has seen an explosion of development in recent years, it's still possible to experience the fresh air and calming effect that comes with a trip to the seacoast, puncuated by great scenery and fresh local food.
