Fodor's Expert Review Kinmata

Gokomachi Shijo Agaru, Kyoto, Kyoto-fu, 604-8044, Japan

Only a few hundred feet from Kyoto's main street of Shijo-dori, the Kinmata has retained its historic character and appeal despite the garish evolution of the surrounding area: stepping into the incense-tinged entranceway to your quiet tatami room slows the pulse and calms the spirit. A framed chart of ryokan guidelines from the Tokugawa shogunate speaks to the inn's long history, as does an old photograph depicting the house and the current master's great-grandfather. The staff, though, are totally up-to-date, and the atmosphere is welcoming. The rate includes two full-course kaiseki meals either in your room or the modern dining room. Email to reserve a room.
