L'hotel Island South

55 Wong Chuk Hang Rd., Aberdeen, Hong Kong, n/a Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China

Why We Like It

Just ten minutes from the city center but a world away in terms of atmosphere, the south island locale encourages a slower pace to a Hong Kong trip, which can definitely be a good thing. L’Hotel Island South rewards its guests with gorgeous, spacious rooms, attentive service (and a super-helpful concierge) and relaxed resort living in the form of the outdoor pool.

Fodor's Expert Review

Located away from the city in the quieter, south side of Hong Kong, L’Hotel South Island is a slick, desirable property whose interior style and spacious rooms make up for its relative remove from the city center. Views of the green Hong Kong hills, a luxurious outdoor pool and a busy nearby sports complex set the scene for a hotel that’s everything the city’s cramped, urban properties are not.

You Should Know Don’t be too put off by the distance from Central Hong Kong: it may look like some distance on the map but the South Island line connects the hotel from Wong Chuk Han to Admiralty in under ten minutes.

Room

The first thing you notice about even the standard rooms at the L’hotel Island South are the size of them—they’re huge by city standards. The next thing you notice is the refined style that leaves rooms bearing a look you might find in a hip interior mag. Think parquet floors, tasteful nature-inspired artwork and quirky furniture cast in plenty of natural light from gaping windows.

Tip Book a hill-facing room if you can – the lush, verdant views are well worth it.

Bathroom

Bathroom pods slot nicely into the rooms in what is a Hong Kong trend for blurring lines between spaces. Bathrooms feature combined bathtub showers and each follows a similarly neutral design.

Lobby

Clean lines, swathes of polished glass, a soothing neutral color palette and an array of delicately balanced sculptures highlight the lobby’s spa-like interior space. If this grand, calming entrance space doesn’t soothe you, then no hotel lobby will.

Pool

The rolling lush landscape of the steep perimeter hill that borders the pool makes for a beautiful change to the city blocks that most other Hong Kong pools face.

Gym

Green views of the hills and the outdoor pool are a welcome sight to focus on during workouts in the well-equipped gym. For guests who want a tailored experience, personal trainers are on-hand to help.

Dining

The hotel might only have one dedicated restaurant but in this case quality trumps quantity. The charming LIS Café gives good reason to pass on meals out in the city for its signature Cantonese and Chinese specialties and an impressive buffet that focuses on fresh seafood.

Drinking

Sports bar-cum-wine lounge Bar LIS is a contradiction that succeeds on its atmosphere. Whether you’re there for the live sports or a quiet glass of wine, it works.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel’s quiet location is a bonus for those who want to escape the city’s relentless pace. With the South Island line connecting south to north, reaching the heart of the city is convenient and takes no time at all. The area is a mix of residential buildings and burgeoning business development so explore the shops and restaurants under the looming flyovers and railway tracks to discover the local flavor of the neighborhood.

Restaurants

L’Hotel Island South isn’t the only hotel to have capitalized on the neighborhood’s charms, with the nearby Ovolo Southside a good alternative for dinner. The inhouse Komune (5-minute walk) restaurant is a quirky, modern affair that serves western fusion dishes well worth the short walk down the road. Travel a little further into Repulse Bay and you can dine at Hong Kong restaurateur Yenn Wong’s Meen & Rice (10-minute drive), hands down some of the best Chinese comfort food this side of the island.

Bars

With space comes creative use of said space, which for this neighborhood means breweries. Both Young Master Brewery (1-minute walk) and Black Kite Hong Kong Brewery (2-minute walk) should be part of a two-brewery tour of the neighborhood.
