Bus Travel

Greyhound and Translux Transfers offer long-distance bus service to cities all over South Africa from Durban. All intercity buses leave from the Durban Station on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (N.M.R. Avenue), between Archie Gumede Road (Old Fort Road) and Sandile Thusi Road (Argyle Road). Bear in mind that you can often fly for much the same prices as traveling by bus, especially if you book well in advance or find a discount.

Three primary bus services are available in and around the city: Durban Transport, Mynah, and People Mover buses, operated by eThekwini Transport Authority. All of the fleet's buses are air-conditioned and equipped with electronic ramps for wheelchair access and strollers. All bus stops are staffed by security people. Small Mynah buses are ideal for short trips within the inner city, costing a couple of rand per ride; you pay as you board and exact change isn't required. Larger, more comfortable People Mover buses make longer city trips, including to the Golden Mile, the Central Business District (aka CBD), and out to the beachfront and back; fares are R5.50 per ride or R16 for a day pass, and buses arrive every 15 minutes between 6:30 am and 10 pm. Durban Transport services city-to-suburb routes. If you plan to make frequent use of public transportation, it would be worth investing in a Muvo Card. This is a single secure smartcard that can be used interchangeably across the three bus lines. Call Muvo at 080/000–6886.

The main bus depot is on Monty Naicker Road (Pine Street) between Samora Machel (Aliwal) and Dorothy Nyembe (Gardiner) streets. Route information is also available at an information office at the corner of Samora Machel Street and Monty Naicker Road.
