The Wayra is the first ship for Kontiki, a new specialty cruise line traveling the coast of Ecuador. Kontiki aims to provide detailed luxury while promoting sustainable travel. Built in 2011 and completely renovated in 2021, the Wayra launched Kontiki’s expeditions in 2022.Read More

The ship, available to fully charter or book per room, delivers a high-end yachting experience. Cutting-edge marine toys, diverse lounging options, and technologically stocked suites with massive bathrooms compete well with others in the category. Cool tones and tasteful Ecuadorian furnishings soften and soothe, creating aesthetic comfort with modern edges.

Beyond the Wayra, Kontiki Expeditions isn’t an average yacht trip. The cruise line has collaborated with communities, “respecting and supporting their activities and traditions, promoting their economic development, and participating in social projects aimed at improving their quality of life.” Activities include immersive experiences in national parks, Indigenous communities, gastronomic projects, and with UNESCO recognized artisans.

What to expect on board

Staterooms & Cabins

Editor Rating
Cabins
Accessibility

The M/Y Kontiki Wayra has nine staterooms across three levels with king-size or double bed options. Five rooms have veranda access, three offer panoramic windows with interior access, and one interior room is on the lower deck with standard windows. There are no single occupancy cabins. Four suites interconnect for families.

As the only sailing member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Wayra packs in hotel amenities. Suites are sizeable, and the showers in the veranda suites are downright massive. Temperature, automated curtain settings, Bluetooth-capable music, and lighting are all managed on a central control pad.

These expeditions require considerable mobility for transfers to shore in zodiacs and stairs to all but the main deck. Kontiki encourages questions regarding accessibility, but this is not an expedition for those with mobility limitations — the only drawback in the otherwise exceptional lodging.

Food & Drink

Dining
Bars

All meals are included and served either in the yacht’s dining area or alfresco on the sun deck. Continental, Ecuadorian and traditional U.S. options are available for breakfast. Ecuadorian specialties join a variety of salads on the lunch buffet. Seafood is common in the three-course dinner options with well-selected wine pairings from the private cellar.  Fresh fruit and juices are readily available, as are a variety of coffees. Guests can rely on chef-prepared snacks and drinks after each excursion.

The timing of the meals easily adjusts for the needs of guests, weather, and changes in the itinerary schedule. However, this can impact the serving temperature at times.

Outside of wine with dinner, alcoholic beverages are not included. The sundeck bar has impeccable service at all of the seating options throughout the deck, including the jacuzzi. In addition to a full range of frozen and non-frozen cocktails, the bartender offers coconuts with straws, infused water, and juices. Bar service moves to the dining area with guests.

Entertainment

Editor Rating

Typical of yachting, the on-ship entertainment standard on larger lines is not available. However, Wayra has a comprehensive collection of equipment for water activities that rival any in its class. Options include a three-deck-high slide, an “ocean pool” that provides a netted pool with an inflatable deck, paddleboards, kayaks, hand-held Seabob underwater scooters, floats, and snorkeling equipment. Kontiki also provides music entertainment between select excursions on land.

Spa & Fitness

Editor Rating

Wayra’s fitness room is limited in size and includes mats, fitness bands, dumbbells, kettlebells, stability balls, and bosu balls. The ship offers spa services on-demand either in the spa room on the lower deck or on the sundeck. Treatments include massages, body treatments, and facials using Ayuna skincare products.

Key cruising tips

Health & Safety

The yacht is equipped for basic medical needs and remains close to the mainland in case of emergencies. Cameras in public areas are monitored from the bridge and patrolled by staff 24/7. At this time, each port requires a tender, controlling access to the ship.

Kontiki follows Ecuadorian policies around Covid and guests need to check the current requirements to enter the country. The ship continues with increased sanitization practices.

Dress Code

The focus on adventure excursions lends itself to casual attire. Kontiki recommends light clothing and comfortable shoes. Exercise apparel is appropriate and evenings tend to be dressy casual.

Junior Cruisers

While family-friendly, Kontiki strongly suggests that children be six or older at departure for supervision in a small-ship setting. Transitions into and out of zodiacs and several excursions are more appropriate for youth with independent mobility and stamina for a few hours of walking.

Service

From entertaining and knowledgeable guides, timely table service, anticipated needs, and round-the-clock support, Wayra has refined service at every level. The turndown service is next level. Despite all efforts to catch it undone, the room had been thoughtfully serviced each time upon return.

Tipping

Gratuities are not included and are optional. Tip with cash or a credit card and it will be distributed amongst the crew and guides.
