Where to stay on way to Luxembourg city?

Where to stay on way to Luxembourg city?
So we are leaving for Belgium, Netherlands and the Ardennes this Wed. We plan to drive from Bruges to the Orval abbey, stopping in Boullion to see the castle. The next day we would like to go to Luxembourg City, maybe check out a castle out that way and then head to Amsterdam. I have heard driving into Luxembourg can be a nightmare so I've been thinking about other options...which is best?
1. Drive into the city and stay in a hotel with parking
2. Stay in a city outside of Luxembourg where you can take a train quickly into the city (But I don't know what city would be best for this).
Any help would be great! Since it's such a brief time we will be in this area I'm trying to make the most of it!
